A few days back waxy posted about the British Movietone Archive, and since work is both crap and slow at the moment, I've been searching through it to find interesting stuff. This morning I found a few ice hockey clips from the 1930s, both starring the Rangers. The first against Detroit, the second against the Canadiens.

This is hilarious. It looks as though some of the players are actually using their sticks as weapons in the fight. They certainly aren't "dropping 'em" like they have to do today. Ever since the first time I saw Slapshot, I have always wondered if the NHL ever featured fighting with sticks like they did in the movie. I've assumed it was only in the minors that hockey players ever fought like that, but apparently they at least didn't throw them to the ground prior to recent times. In the video, I saw one guy even using his stick to hold an opposing player in place by wrapping it around his waist. That certainly wouldn't be acceptable today, either.
"This is hockey in America..." At least it's not boring. Ever watch cricket?
